Did you know? — The story behind the bee

• The piece comes from an opera, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, based on an 1831 fairy-tale poem by the great Russian writer Alexander Pushkin.
• In the story, a magical swan transforms Prince Gvidon into a bumblebee so he can fly across the sea to his father — and along the way he stings the villains who wronged his family. That sting is the "revenge" in the title!
• Rimsky-Korsakov didn't consider it one of his major works — he didn't even include it in his own concert suite from the opera, yet it became his most famous music.
• It was originally written for orchestra, not solo instrument — but its difficulty made it a legendary showpiece arranged for piano, violin, trumpet, and almost everything else.
• The piece entered pop culture as the theme for the radio show "The Green Hornet," and a 1941 big-band jazz cover by trumpeter Harry James made it a sensation.
• Rimsky-Korsakov was a master orchestrator who taught a young Igor Stravinsky — and he began his career as an officer in the Russian navy.
