About Clair de Lune

Clair de Lune is a free, browser-based rhythm game built on one of the most beloved and instantly recognizable pieces in all of classical music: Claude Debussy's "Clair de lune." Its name means "moonlight" in French, and it is the third movement of his Suite bergamasque, a piano suite Debussy began composing around 1890 when he was in his late twenties and significantly revised before its publication in 1905. In this game, Debussy's dreamy, flowing melody drifts toward you, and you play it note by note, sinking into the calm, moonlit atmosphere of the piece.

Did you know? — The story behind the moonlight

• The title comes from an 1869 poem called "Clair de lune" by the French Symbolist poet Paul Verlaine, which describes masked dancers and calm, "sad and beautiful" moonlight.
• The movement was originally titled "Promenade sentimentale" — Debussy renamed it before publishing the suite.
• Debussy was at first reluctant to publish the suite, feeling these early pieces weren't in his mature style — until a publisher, eager to capitalize on his fame, convinced him in 1905.
• It's written in the rich key of D-flat major in a flowing 9/8 meter, marked "andante très expressif" — walking pace, very expressively.
• "Bergamasque" refers to masked festival characters from Bergamo, Italy — the Harlequins and Columbines of the old commedia dell'arte theater tradition.
• Today Clair de Lune is one of the most famous piano pieces in the world, heard in countless films and television shows — a defining work of musical Impressionism.
