Long before you were born, a ring was forged from gold stolen out of the Rhine — gold that was never meant to leave the water, cursed the moment it did. Kings have died for it since. A dragon sleeps on it still, in a mountain not far from here.
You know none of this yet. You only know the road ahead splits in two, and that something has been watching these paths for longer than anyone living can say.
Two ways lie open before you: the Misty Woods, thick with old secrets, or the Standing Stones, older than memory itself. Where you begin is yours to choose. What happens next is yours to live with — for good.
Ring Quest is a free, browser-based narrative adventure built on the story of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen — the four-opera cycle he spent twenty-six years composing, drawn from Norse mythology and the medieval Nibelungenlied. Instead of watching the saga unfold on a stage, you walk it yourself: a hand-drawn map of twenty locations, from the Rhine's banks to the halls of Valhalla, connected by paths your character actually has to travel one step at a time. Every location holds a branching story with real choices, and every choice is remembered — by the game, and eventually by the ending you get.
This isn't a game with a single correct path. Kindness, greed, and wisdom accumulate quietly across everything you do, five different endings wait at Valhalla depending on the pattern you left behind, and six specific choices can end your saga permanently if you're unprepared for them. A recurring, disguised figure tests you at several points along the way — regular players of Wagner's Ring will recognize him before the game ever says his name.
Click a reachable location on the map to walk there — only places connected to where you're currently standing are available, so the map has to be explored on foot rather than jumped around. Inside each location, read the scene and choose how your character responds; choices lead to further choices, consequences, and sometimes a relic worth keeping. Your Inventory tracks everything you've collected and everywhere you've been. Reach Valhalla, and the saga you told determines how it ends.
