About Sousa Star

Sousa Star is a free, browser-based rhythm game built on the most famous American march ever written: John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever." Composed in 1896 and premiered in 1897, it became so beloved that in 1987 the U.S. Congress named it the official National March of the United States. In this game, Sousa's stirring, energetic march streams toward you, and you play it note by note — feeling the driving beat and bright melodies that have made this march a symbol of celebration for over a century.

A march is built for movement: a strong, steady beat, usually in 2/4 or 4/4 time, with crisp rhythms and bold melodies. Did you know? — Sousa & the March King

• John Philip Sousa (1854–1932) is known as "The March King" and wrote roughly 136 marches in his lifetime.
• According to Sousa, the march came to him on Christmas Day 1896, composed entirely in his head aboard an ocean liner as he sailed home after learning his band manager had died — he wrote it down once he reached shore.
• Sousa said the grand final section paints a picture of the country: the broad main melody is the North, the soaring piccolo part is the South, and the bold trombone countermelody is the West — joining together as the Union.
• Sousa helped invent the sousaphone — the big wraparound tuba named after him — designed so its sound would project up and over a marching band. It's now a staple of nearly every marching band.
• He also composed "Semper Fidelis," the official march of the U.S. Marine Corps, and led "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band for 12 years.
• Fittingly, the last piece Sousa ever conducted — at a rehearsal the day before he died in 1932 — was "The Stars and Stripes Forever."
